Origins and Meaning of the Black Mama
There are several versions about the origin and meaning of the festival and each of the characters, but undoubtedly, the gratitude and devotion to the Virgen de las Mercedes for protecting Latacunga and its inhabitants from the destructive power of the eruptions of Cotopaxi, is undoubtedly the one that has most permeated Latacungueña society and which is expressed in the two main representations of the festival that take place in the month of September and November each year.
If we analyze in detail the development of the festival, we can observe that it is the representation of a town that with its military and civil authorities, ecclesiastical figures, a philanthropic Matron who provides and multiple participants, go to Calvario, the highest elevation of the city, to protect themselves from the eruption of the colossus; while waiting for the miracle of the Virgin, they took food, drink and music to placate the wait, until the natural event concludes without victims to lament.
A Spectacle of Colors and Rhythms
Every year, Latacunga is transformed into a vibrant stage where the streets are filled with comparsas, elaborate costumes and traditional band music. The Mama Negra is a popular theater motivated by faith and gratitude, as we can see in the two versions of the festival detailed below:
