According to local versions, its name comes from the word "Yamboc", which means "smoking lagoon", because in ancient times it presented constant evaporation. It is located between the limits of the province of Cotopaxi within the Salcedo canton, along the slope that mediates the lagoon, snake the rails of the old railroad built a century ago by General Eloy Alfaro.

It is 1,100 meters long and 290 meters wide, and has very particular characteristics due to the greenish color of its waters and the large presence of algae.

Potential tourist destination

Currently there is a great tourist activity motivated by the presence of several restaurants and operators that have spread its natural beauty with multiple attractions such as boat rides and small boats, from which you can see the birds of the place and the stunning scenery that generates its environment.
Several legends create a particular mysticism in the lagoon, which undoubtedly increases the interest to know it and spend relaxing moments in a natural environment of the Ecuadorian highlands, very visited for its easy access and strategic location. It is in the central highlands of our beloved Ecuador.

Popular tradition has it that the lagoon was formed following a landslide that covered an ancient village, whose souls still inhabit its depths. From the myth it is believed that the lagoon is enchanted and that objects and people who fall into its waters do not come back out. Stories claim that a train fell into the lagoon during the presidency of Eloy Alfaro and that the screams of its occupants are heard in the middle of the night.
