Discover why this event attracts thousands of travelers looking to immerse themselves in authentic Ecuadorian folklore.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Origins and Meaning of the Black Mama<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several versions about the origin and meaning of the festival and each of the characters, but undoubtedly, the gratitude and devotion to the Virgen de las Mercedes for protecting Latacunga and its inhabitants from the destructive power of the eruptions of Cotopaxi, is undoubtedly the one that has most permeated Latacungue\u00f1a society and which is expressed in the two main representations of the festival that take place in the month of September and November each year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we analyze in detail the development of the festival, we can observe that it is the representation of a town that with its military and civil authorities, ecclesiastical figures, a philanthropic Matron who provides and multiple participants, go to Calvario, the highest elevation of the city, to protect themselves from the eruption of the colossus; while waiting for the miracle of the Virgin, they took food, drink and music to placate the wait, until the natural event concludes without victims to lament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">A Spectacle of Colors and Rhythms<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, Latacunga is transformed into a vibrant stage where the streets are filled with comparsas, elaborate costumes and traditional band music. The Mama Negra is a popular theater motivated by faith and gratitude, as we can see in the two versions of the festival detailed below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mama Negra of September: the Vivanderas of the Mercado de la Merced and El Salto pay homage to the Virgin of La Merced<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 23 and 24 of each year, the Vivanderas of the Pichincha market (La Merced), the Association of Devotees and Donors, pay homage and give thanks to the Virgin of La Merced for the favors received. It is organized by the Municipality of the city, the five main characters are chosen among Latacungue\u00f1os citizens who have excelled in multiple fields and enjoy the tradition.<\/p>\n<p>As main events of the November celebration we have the Change of Command, ceremony in which the outgoing characters, deliver the symbols of each one to the incoming characters, this event takes place a couple of days before the big day, the stage par excellence is in the basement of the municipal palace, in the Vicente Le\u00f3n park.<\/p>\n<p>The second Saturday of November is the big day of the festival, where the troupes, main characters and companions, walk through the main streets of Latacunga, filling the Latacungue\u00f1o atmosphere with joy, music and color, in which we receive thousands of national and foreign tourists who come to appreciate our cultural richness.
